Sewer Main Pipes Cleaning & Inspection

The City of Ketchikan Wastewater Division will begin cleaning and inspecting sewer main pipes in the City of Ketchikan starting August 11:

Bear Valley area, Forest Avenue, Schoenbar Road, and Valley Forge Area.

Tentatively scheduled to start August 18:

Parts of Emma Court, Carlanna Lake Road, Anderson Street, and Denali Avenue.

Tentatively scheduled to start August 25:

Fairview Avenue, Buren Road, Denali Avenue Hill Road, and Chatham Avenue.

Purpose of sanitary sewer cleaning:

This is part of a routine maintenance program to prevent blockages, overflows, and backups.  Specialized high-pressure water jetting equipment will be used to remove built-up grease, debris, and sediment from the inside of the sanitary sewer main pipes that serve your neighborhood. This helps ensure the smooth flow of wastewater and reduces the risk of disruptions or problems with your sewer service.

During the cleaning process, you may observe:

Workers and equipment in the street and/or right of way.

Brief Noise: Noise from the cleaning equipment and vacuum trucks may be heard outside.

Residents may experience surging, gurgling or bubbling sounds coming from toilets, floor drains or building sewer piping when the wastewater sewer main on their street is being cleaned.  This is normal, and not a cause for concern.  However, if you observe sewer backup into your building please contact the City of Ketchikan Public Works at 907-228-4736 and give your address and indicate that you are having a wastewater issue.
