Northwest Coast peoples have created a rich, complex and unique visual language, now called “formline design,” that remains an instrument of expression today. Students of all levels will work towards a strong foundation in the principles and structure of this powerful tradition, employing elements and concepts in order to create original designs. Jackson’s knowledge of design and carving began with Nathan Jackson, and was guided by instructors and artists from Alaska to New York. Drawing from fluency and articulation in formline concepts, he works in a continuum that has always dissolved boundaries.
